Antiquing and antiqued leather

A finish with deliberately uneven colour — for period-style furniture and interiors where an even coating would look artificial.

Not every finish is meant to be even. On period-style furniture, in club interiors and when restoring old armchairs, a uniform, flat colour looks artificial — like plastic pretending to be leather. Antiquing means deliberately varying the shade: darker in the recesses, lighter on the raised areas, with a visible transition.

This is a finishing technique, not a way of hiding damage. Holes and wear still have to be repaired first — antiquing is added at the very end.

How we do it

  • Agreeing the effect on a sample: level of contrast, base colour and shadow colour.
  • Preparation and base colouring.
  • Applying shading layers by hand, following the shape of the piece.
  • Sealing in a matt finish or with a light sheen.

Before you decide

An antiqued finish isn't easy to undo — going back to an even colour means stripping the coating and re-colouring from scratch. That's why we always make a sample and show it on your furniture, in your lighting.

It looks good on leathers with a pronounced grain and on furniture with embossing, quilting or buttoning. On a flat, smooth sofa the effect is often disappointing, and in that case we advise against it.

Leather Furniture — other services

Aniline and Semi-Aniline

Uncoated leathers need different chemistry and a different technique than pigmented car upholstery — otherwise the finish comes off along with the dirt.

Wear and hole repair

Wear and hole repair

Filling with repair compound and recreating the leather grain, so the repaired area doesn't stand out as a smooth patch.

Barber and dental chairs

Servicing and repairs for chairs in professional use — where wear is daily and downtime costs money.

Handbags and small leather goods

Worn corners, rubbed handles, scratches and faded colour. The same work as on a seat: filling the damage, recreating the grain, re-colouring and protection.
